POETRY OUT LOUD

The Maryland State Arts Council (MSAC) conducts the Poetry Out Loud state program in partnership with the National Endowment for the Arts and The Poetry Foundation, which award more than $100,000 in prizes to students and schools at the state and national levels.

Previously open to two counties in Maryland as a pilot program, the program was opened to grades 11 and 12 in all Maryland schools, both public and private, for the 2009 competition. Twenty-seven schools in nine counties participated. The competition is again open to 11th and 12th graders, public and private, statewide. Competitions will be held at participating schools in the fall of 2009, with the county competitions taking place in January, 2010, the regionals in February, 2010, and the state competition on February 27, 2010 at 1:00 PM at the Enoch Pratt Central Library Wheeler Auditorium. The name of the school winner must be given to Chris Stewart by December 11, 2009.

The Poetry Out Loud: National Recitation Contest is a great way to teach poetry and help students develop written and oral communication skills. POL satisfies most of the National Council for Teachers of English (NCTE) English Language Arts Standards. In addition to memorizing and performing great poems, students will have the opportunity to discuss poetry and—if the teacher wishes to use the supplemental lesson plans—to write poetry of their own. If you would like the Teacher’s Guides and Toolkits for your school, email Chris Stewart or call her at 410-767-6476.

PLEASE NOTE: The deadline for school registration for the 2010 competiton has passed.
